Word of the Day:

  • Menace – noun [men-uss]
    • A person or thing that is likely to cause harm; a threat of danger.  As in: drugs are a menace to our society.

This Day in History: 1781 – Hopelessly trapped at Yorktown, Virginia, British General Lord Cornwallis surrenders 8,000 British soldiers and seamen to a larger American force, effectively bringing an end to the American Revolution and winning independence for the United States of America.

Fact of the Day:  When the Revolutionary War began in April of  1775, the American colonies sought more autonomy within the British Empire, not complete separation.  The Continental Congress, which led American resistance, petitioned King George III that summer, denying that independence was the Americans’ objective, and appealing to him to protect the colonies.  At this critical juncture, British ministers and the king rebuffed the Americans, and started to treat them as open and avowed enemies, leading to independence as the only option.

Strange, but True:  The American Revolutionary War was a war fought mostly between the United States and Great Britain.  Of little knowledge, however, is the fact that it was a European affair, as well.  The French, Spanish, and Dutch would all eventually fight on the side of the Americans, while the Germans would offer assistance to the British.
