Word of the Day:

  •  Hackneyed – adjective [hack-need]
    • Repeated too often; overfamiliar through overuse.  As in: every time my internet goes down the cable company gives me a hackneyed explanation.

This Day in History: 1929 – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hands out its first awards at a dinner party for around 250 people in Hollywood, California.

Fact of the Day:  The first official Best Picture winner (and the only silent film to ever win Best Picture) was Wings.  The most expensive movie of its time, with a budget of $2 million, the movie told the story of two World War I pilots who fall for the same woman.

#StrangeButTrue: The day before the Academy Awards, another storied awards ceremony takes place: the Golden Raspberry awards, which honor the worst performances in a given year.  In 2010, Sandra Bullock won a “Razzie” for her performance in the comedy flop All About Steve, and the next day, won an Oscar for Best Actress in The Blind Side.
